It’s our Under the Sea Themed week on The SEN Resources Blog, and as with our other themed weeks, we are showcasing some of the best children’s books to fit this theme.
Mayday Mouse (Child’s Play) An adorable bed time story with beautiful illustrations and featuring a brave mouse. Without spoiling the story.. there’s a fun twist in the book which helps explain to children that often things aren’t as scary as they seem!
Ten Little Mermaids (Imagine That) (to be released September 2018) Like no book we’ve read before. Unusual, funny and sweet- perfect for children excited by the magic of mermaids.
Play Felt Ocean Animals (Imagine That) We are big fans of play felt books, they are great sensory activity for developing fine motor skills and creativity. They also enable books and reading to be more interactive and engaging. This play felt book by Imagine That is brilliant and really helps children to develop key ‘under the sea’ vocabulary.
First Encyclopedia of Seas and Oceans (Usborne) A fantastic, educational book packed full of wonderful illustrations and interesting facts. Perfect for young children who are desperate to find out more about the sea and the creatures that live there.
Ocean Deep (Child’s Play) Wow! What a book! Incredible for children and adults alike. Like Our Solar System by Child’s Play, this book has detailed pictures, fantastic facts and cleverly folds completely out. It illustrates the creatures that inhabit the different depths of the ocean.
That’s Not My Pirate (Usborne) We love the ‘That’s not my’ series of touch, feely books by Usborne and this one certainly doesn’t disappoint. Its tactile nature and simple text makes it perfect for young children and babies.
The Mighty Splash! (Imagine That) A fun, unique under the sea, bed time story with an important moral. Helping children to overcome their fears and learn what it is to be brave.
Miffy at the Seaside (Simon & Schuster) This gorgeous Miffy book depicts the perfect day at the sea side. Adorable illustrations and rhyming text- wonderful for engaging young children in reading.
Splash! Under the Sea (Imagine That) and Look! In the Ocean (Imagine That) Two fun activity books, both packed full of stickers and stunning pictures. Brilliant for keeping little ones entertained whilst learning about the sea.
Peekaboo! In the Ocean! (Child’s Play) Perhaps the cutest under the sea themed book we’ve found. Toddlers and babies are notorious for finding peekaboo hilarious so this book brought plenty of giggles to our house hold. The choice of sea creatures to ‘play’ peekaboo with in this book are perfect too!
