Children's Book Review

Review: Captain Flinn And The Pirate Dinosaurs

One of my little boy’s best friends (and his lovely parents) very kindly gave him this book recently, Captain Flinn and The Pirate Dinosaurs, and it’s quickly become his favourite fiction book.

We’ve also been lucky enough to be able to review the other books in the series and are now hooked!

Captain Flinn and The Pirate Dinosaurs are fiction children’s books that perfectly strike the balance of being exciting… whilst not too scary for young children! Plus, it’s full of dinosaurs and pirates…so what’s not to love?!

What do we like about the series?

  • Exciting Stories– When we were reading these books together it was like we’d suddenly made the jump from toddler books into more grown-up children’s books, the kids were literally on the edge of their seats listening to the stories- so exciting for them, full of fast paced action. A fantastic choice for older children who still enjoy picture books.

  • Illustrations– Not only are the stories a bit more grown-up than other picture books, but the illustrations are too, with darker colours, more detail and scarier characters. The pictures definitely encouraged the kids to want to read the books.

  • Predictable Format– For many children, including many children with special educational needs, having a predictable format for a series of books can be comforting. I loved that these books embraced a similar format for each story, not only does it provide reassurance for children that they roughly know what’s going to happen, but the repetition of phrases also helps with language acquisition and reading.
