As Christmas approaches, many children become excited about writing their annual letter to Santa or Father Christmas. To make this festive tradition accessible and enjoyable for all learners, I’ve created a printable Dear Santa Letter Template Pack that you can download here featuring two different versions to suit a range of ages and abilities.
A Simple and Inclusive Christmas Writing Activity
Writing a letter to Santa is a fun way for children to practise communication and early writing skills while engaging with the magic of Christmas. However, not every child or young person finds writing easy, which is why this pack includes two options.
What’s Included?
Version 1: Supported Letter Template
This version is ideal for younger children or those who need additional writing support. Children simply fill in:
- Their name
- Their age
- The gift they are hoping for
The structured format reduces writing demands while still allowing children to participate independently and experience the excitement of sending a letter to Santa.
Version 2: Open-Ended Letter Template
This version includes a simple “Dear Santa” heading with writing lines underneath. It allows children to compose their own letter, making it suitable for children who are more confident writers and would like to share their Christmas wishes, achievements, or festive messages in their own words.
Benefits for Learners with SEND
Children with special educational needs often benefit from structured and accessible writing tasks. The supported template helps reduce barriers to participation by:
- Minimising the amount of writing required
- Providing a clear and predictable format
- Supporting confidence and independence
- Encouraging communication and self-expression
The open-ended version can then provide additional challenge for children who are ready to extend their writing skills.
