Phase 5 Phonics (Year 1 Level)
During Phase 5 Phonics of the DFE’s letters and sounds programme, children are introduced to various new graphemes, some of which have alternative spellings to the phonemes they have already learnt. For example, they will have learnt ‘ai’ in Phase 3 for the sound ‘a’ as in ‘drain’. Now they are taught that you can also make that sound with the graphemes ‘ay’ (e.g. play) and split digraph grapheme ‘a-e’ (e.g same).
These are the new graphemes introduced in Phase 5:
ea, e-e , ie, ay, aw, au, a-e , wh, ue, u-e, ph, oy, ou, oe, ir, i-e, ey and ew The following tricky words are also introduced:
– Oh
– Their
– People – Mr
– Mrs
– Looked – Called – Asked
– Could
