(For the child whose teachers, SENDCO and parents shouldn’t have to fight )
By Georgina Durrant
No bells that startle, no crowded halls,
Just soft hellos and gentle calls.
The day begins when each child’s ready,
Not rushed, but welcomed calm and steady.
Uniforms flex to meet each need
No battles over what to heed.
A hoodie, joggers, favourite shoes
Because comfort isn’t something to lose.
The classrooms hum with quiet care,
With seating choice and softened glare.
No pressure here to fit one way
Just space to learn, and time to play.
The dinner hall’s a gentler space,
With smaller groups and softer pace.
No clatter, queues, or sensory strain
Just time to eat, connect, remain.
Visuals guide the day ahead,
With signs and symbols calmly spread.
Staff use visuals, not just their voice
Because communication should offer choice.
No prizes pinned for being there
Just understanding of health, and commitment to being fair.
The day’s structure’s clear, the rhythm kind
Predictable, with every mind
Considered in the way it flows
So no child’s left to guess or pose.
EHCPs are still in sight (!)
Not rationed, blocked, or lost in fight.
Identification and support arrives without delay
Not months of waiting, lost in grey.
And those who support.. the TAs, teaching staff, The SENDCos balancing every path,
Are given time, and space to grow,
With training deep and funds that flow.
No forced eye contact for children, no neurotypical demand,
Children aren’t a grade, a tick, a plan,
They’re met with grace, just as they stand.
And parents aren’t kept at the gate
They’re welcomed in, they co-create.
Their voices shape the way things run
Because inclusion starts with one.
Children aren’t reshaped to fit the frame
This school is able to adapt without acclaim.
It doesn’t ask them to disguise
It can meet their needs and let them rise.
