Helpful ARFID Resources for Parents and Teachers

Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, or ARFID has previously been known as ‘selective eating disorder’ and ‘feeding disorder’. ARFID is when someone avoids certain foods/food groups and/or restricts the amount of food they are eating.

ARFID or Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, is NOT as a result of someone having concerns about their body image/weight loss, but instead, it can be as a result of:

  • Sensory differences – the smell, taste or texture of particular foods
  • Previous negative experiences with foods such as sickness/choking, resulting in fear of negative consequences relating to food.
  • Not feeling hungry/lack of interest in eating.

What are the links between ARFID and autism?

According to the National Autistic Society, the ‘ARFID pattern of eating is common in individuals with autism’ and ‘sensory sensitivity is likely to be one of the underlying causes.’ Find out more information on the National Autistic Society’s website here
