Children often (and unsurprisingly) find it complicated that we have upper and lower case letters in our alphabet. It can be tricky learning which ones are which.

Here’s a fun and simple way of helping children to learn which Upper case letters match with which lower case letters:

Alphabet Cars

What do you need:

• Various toy vehicles
• Pen and Paper
• Sellotape

1.Draw out a ‘carpark’ for the toy vehicles, labelling each space with an Upper Case letter of the alphabet (ideally in order to start with). Or you can download my Free Printable to cut out here.

2. Start by supporting children to remember the names of the alphabet by asking them to park the vehicles in the letter spaces. For example, “Park the ambulance at letter A please”.

If you have any letter shapes as well, like our wooden ones from Toys of Wood Oxford you could use them to support the task.

3. Once they are confident with their upper case letters write the corresponding lower case letters onto pieces of paper and stick them to the tops of the vehicles.

4. Play! Encourage children to match the cars to their correct parking space.

Extension: You can also extend children’s learning by challenging them to spell out simple words using the vehicles.
