Our Favourite Books About Chinese New Year for Young Children

It’s Chinese New Year on Saturday 25th January 2020 and this year will be the Year of the Rat. As well as creating fun kids craft activities to celebrate it (have a look here at our easy to make paper rat) we’ve been searching over the last week or so for our favourite books for young kids about Chinese New Year and here they are:

Our favourite books about Chinese New Year for young children:

  • Peppa Pig: Chinese New Year  Kids love Peppa Pig and this book is a lovely way of introducing children to some of the main aspects of Chinese New Year. It’s also a fantastic way of preparing children for what they might be doing and learning at school/pre-school, as the story is about Peppa and her brother George learning about Chinese New Year at their playgroup.

  • The Great Race: The Story of the Chinese Zodiac Such beautiful illustrations and a gorgeous story, ideal for reception aged children at school or at home. It tells the story of all the animals racing to be chosen as the year’s animal for Chinese New Year.
  • Mr. Men: Chinese New Year (Mr Men Celebrations) A funny yet educational story about the Mr. Men characters celebrating Chinese New Year. Lots of information about Chinese New Year traditions throughout the story, helping children to learn about it without even realising they are!

  • Baby’s First Chinese New Year We adore this book and don’t be put off by the title, it can be read by young children as well as babies, our 5 year old tester enjoyed it. It summarises the key points about Chinese New Year and includes lovely pictures.

  • Chinese New Year (We Love Festivals)– This was our favourite non-fiction book about Chinese New Year for school aged children. It’s packed full of interesting facts and real life photographs to help children understanding the traditions of Chinese New Year. Fantastic for inquisitive minds!
